This breed known as Bargur, is a draught cattle breed found around Bargur hills, in Bhavani taluk of Erode district of Tamil Nadu. Bargur breed is cultivated to carry out agricultural operations in hilly terrain.
Bargur breed is also renowned for its trotting ability. Bargur cattle has skin coat as brown in colour with white patches all over the body.
They have horns that are light brown in colour and they emerge closer at the root. Their horns are inclined backward, outward and upward with a forward curve, which finally ends with a sharp edge at the tip.
Thisbreed animals are maintained in extensive management system and Bargur cattle are raised in forest area in a semi-wild condition and housed in enclosures called “Pattys”, in groups of 50 to 200 heads, by hired local tribal laborers called “Lingaiys”.
Bargur cows give average milk yield per lactation as 350 kg and the overall range is from 250-1300 kg.
