Deoni is a draught type animal. It is a valuable breed of medium size.
Deoni breed has other common names like Surti, Dongarpati, Dongri, Wannera, Waghyd, Balankya and Shevera. General belief system says that Deoni seems to have evolved from the mix of Gir, Dangi and local cattle.
Originated in Western Andra Pradesh and also found in Marathwada region of Maharashtra state and adjoining part of Karnataka.
This breed is mainly confined to the north west and western portions of the Nizam's Dominions and appears to be allied to the Dangi cattle of Bombay Province.
Body colour is usually spotted black and white.
The cows are reported to be the best milkers in the Nizam's Dominions.
This breed has three strains viz. Balankya (complete white), Wannera (complete white with partial black face) and Waghyd or Shevera (black and white spotted). Small sized horns emerge from the side of the poll behind and above the eyes in outward and upward direction. The tips of the horn are blunt. The breed is characterized by drooping ears and prominent & slightly bulging forehead. Deoni bullocks are preferred for heavy works and bullocks can effectively be used even up to 12 years of age. The fat percentage in the milk is 4.3 % on an average.
This breed gives a milk yield that ranges from 636 to 1230 kg per lactation.
