Kankrej is also usually known as Wadad or Waged, Vagadia, Talabda, Nagar, Bonnai. The milk of this cow is highly medicinal in nature. It is very useful in tick fever, heat stress, contagious abortion and tuberculosis.
Originated from Southeast Rann of Kutch of Gujarat and adjoining Rajasthan (Barmer and Jodhpur district).
The horns of Kankrej are lyre-shaped.
Colour of this breed of cattle varies from silver-grey to iron-grey or steel black.
Kankrej has got a very queer pace of walking called as 1 ¼ paces (sawai chal).
Kankrej is valued for fast, powerful, draught cattle.
Useful in ploughing and carting.
The cows are good milkers, yielding about 1400 kgs per lactation.
This is one of the most prized breeds of cattle in India. Its home is the country to the south-east of the Rann of Kutch extending from the south west comer of the Tharparkar district of Sind to Ahmedabad in Bombay Province and from Deesa in the east to Radhanpur State in the west, particularly along the Banaras and Saraswati rivers.
They are very highly prized as fast, powerful draught cattle and in the past were extensively exported to America and other countries for grading up the indigenous cattle. In this way Kankrej cattle have been largely instrumental in the formation of beef breeds in those countries which are better able to withstand tropical conditions than the indigenous stock of European origin.
