Nagori

Characteristics:

  • The breeding ground of Nagori breed of cattle is Bikaner, Jodhpur and Nagaur district of Rajasthan. Nagori breed gets its name from the name of the home ground i.e., Nagaur district. But these animals are also found in adjoining Jodhpur district and Nokha tehsil of Bikaner district.
  • They are White in colour and are upstanding, very alert and agile animals with long and narrow face like that of a horse.
  • Considering the proximity of the native tracts of the Hariana breed of cattle in the north and northeast and Kankrej breed of cattle in the south and southwest, it seems reasonable to suppose that Nagori cattle may have evolved from these breeds.
  • Nagori breed cattle are very fine and big animals. They are upstanding, active and docile, with skin coat colour as white and grey colour. These breed type have long, deep and powerful frames.
  • They have straight backs and a well-developed quarters. Nagori cattle have a face that is long and narrow. But their forehead is very flat and not very prominent.
  • Nagori cattle have eyelids that are rather heavy and overhanging. Their eyes are quite small, clear and bright. The ears are large and pendulous. Their horns are average in size. Their horns emerge from the outer angles of the poll and in an outward direction.
  • Then their horns are carried upwards with a gentle curve to turn in at the points. This breed type is one of the most renowned for trotting draught breed of India.
  • They are usually appreciated for their fast draught activity. Since these breed type asfast trotters, they are used all over Rajputana of Rajasthan in light iron-wheeled carts for quick transportation.
  • Nagori cows give average milk yield per lactation as 603 kg with an average milk fat of 5.8%. Nagori cowsgive lactation yield that usually ranges from 479 to 905 kg.
