Ponwar cattle is a draught breed from North India. It is considered to be developed from a mixture of hilly cattle (Morang - Nepalese hill cattle) and a plain land cattle. They are also commonly called as “Purnea”. Their breeding pathway lies in the Pilibhit district of Uttar Pradesh.
These cattle have skin colour which has no particular pattern but black and white patches are intermixed.Ponwar cattle possesses medium sized horns, which generally emerge outward, upward and then curve inward with pointed tips.
Ponwar breed type animals act in a semi-wild manner and they are quite tough to control. These animals move in very small groups and they put their heads down in between each other. This is a peculiar behavior that has emerged due to fear of predators.
The animals are maintained in extensive management system, without provision of sheds and are raised entirely on grazing in forestland without feed supplementation. Females are generally not milked and calves are allowed to suckle the milk.
Ponwar bullocks are usually fast movers and hence they are used both, for agricultural operations and transportation. Ponwar cows are generally poor milkers. These Cows producea fair amount of milk with a moderate yield of 459 Kg per lactation.
