This breed of cattle called Punganur is a dwarf, dual purpose cattle. They are mainly confined to Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh.
This breed was developed by Rulers of Punganurarea and hence named after the area. The breeding tract is confined to the taluks of Punganur and adjacent taluks of Vayalpad, Madnapalli and Palamaner in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh.
Punganur breed is mainly reared at Livestock Research Station, Palamaner, Chittoor district, Andhra Pradesh. This place is attached to Shri Venkateswara Veterinary University, Tirupati.
Some animals are also maintained by private breeders. This breed type usually white, grey or light brown to dark brown or red in colour. At times, animals with white colour mixed with red, brown or black coloured patches are also found.
Puganur is very easily noticed by its short stature. This breed has a broad forehead and quite short horns. Their horns are very much crescent shaped and these horns often loose curving backward and go forward in males.
In case of their females the horns travel lateral and then forward. Known for draught resistance, it can thrive well on dry fodder feeding. Punganur bullocks are generally used for agricultural operation in light soil.
They are used for driving carts for transportation and special races as well. Punganur cows give an average milk yield as 546 Kg per lactation (which ranges from 194 to 1100 Kg) and also with 5% average milk fat.
