Geographical Region : Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana. Good herds of pure Sahiwal cattle are available around Fazilka and Abohar towns of Ferozepur district in Punjab.
Sahiwal cattle are the best indigenous dairy breed.
This cow is also called ‘Red Gold’ and identified by its prominent red color. Originated in Montgomery region of undivided India.
This breed otherwise known as Lola, Lambi Bar, Montgomery, Multani, Teli.
This is considered to be the best -Zebu milch breed.
The animal is generally dull in color. Some may be pale red or dark brown or even blackish. Some others may tend to have spots or patches of large white areas. Reddish dun or pale red in color, sometimes flashed with white patches.
They have a symmetrical body, broad head, long deep lethargic and heavy constitution. Animals have well developed udder and good slope at rump. The skin is fine and horns stumpy.
Heavy breed with symmetrical body having loose skin. The animal is referred as 'Lola' as its got heavy dewlap. In general, the average weight of its males are about 520 kg and the females of this species are 340 kg.
These are essentially milch cattle and owing to their milking capacity they are largely exported to other areas for milk production .
It is reported to be a good beef breed.
The bullocks are useful for slow work.
This breeds got imported to Australia, due to its excellent qualities and were used in developing a synthetic crossbreed known as Australian Milking Zebu (AMZ) cattle.
