The home of this breed is Tharparkar district of Hyderabad, India, and cattle are now distributed up to south-east in Sind, Amarkot, Naukot, Dhoro Naro, and Chor. The area extends up to Cutch deserts of West India, Marwar in east and Palampur area of North Bombay. This variety of cattle breed - Tharparkar (named after the Thar Desert in Rajasthan) is actually a dual purpose breed as well as a disease resistant cattle breed. Tharparkar is also commonly known as “White Sindhi”, “Grey Sindhi” and “Thari” as per the place of its true origin (Sind, Pakistan). The breeding tract of the breed includes Kutch district of Gujarat and Barmer, Jaisalmer and Jodhpur districts of Rajasthan.
The breed is medium sized compact with white and light grey colored coat. Their limbs and face are usually darker than the rest of the body. In the case of bulls their neck, hump, and fore hind quarters are also dark. The color gets darker during winter. The animals will thrive well on little bushy vegetation (Sewan grass) throughout drought and fodder insufficiency condition and lactates fair amount of milk with decent yield of 1749 kilo grams per lactation (ranging from 913 to 2147 Kg per lactation). With 3-4 inches teats, Cows are good yielders. Good animals with high nutrition have produced even higher than 3000 liter per lactation in farm condition. Bulls are good for carting and ploughing.
The animals are usually medium sized, also deep built, short with straight and very strong limbs. strong well-proportioned frame, broad poll and forehead is slightly convex with medium sized horns.
Moderately developed dewlaps with straight and moderately long back. The bull is fine with black switch, white or light grey line long the spine in young animals. Males show virility are moderately developed.
This cow has higher heat tolerance and sickness resistance and thus it had been used for reproducing “Karan Fries” breed - an artificial crossbred cattle breed at National dairy research institute (NDRI).
Originated in Tharparkar district (Pakistan) of undivided India and additionally found in Rajasthan. Otherwise referred to as White Sindhi, Gray Sindhi and Thari.
Tharparkars are usually medium sized, very compact and also have lyre-shaped horn.
Body color is white or light grey.
Desert bred stock are particularly hardy and economical to maintain. with fine bone, dean limbs, strong ankles and hard feet.
