Hallikar

Home Tract :

  • Mysore, Mandya, Bangalore, Kolar, Tumkur, Hassan, Chitradurga of Karnataka

Type :

  • Draught. Best draught breed of southern India.
  • Medium sized, compact & muscular.

Skin :

  • Grey to dark grey
  • Light grey markings on the face, dewlap & under the body

Key insight :

  • Bull can work whole day in sunlight without stop.
  • Extremely powerful and suitable for agricultural work, capable of plowing fields.

Malnad Gidda

Home Tract :

  • Malenadu area (coastal/hilly area) of Karnataka Mangalore, Kumta, Shimoga

Type :

  • Draught breed, Very small in size.
  • Highly resistant to most diseases, takes little fodder

Skin :

  • Brown, black,
  • fawn, white

Key insight :

  • Milk & cow urine have significant medicinal properties & enhances the immune system.
  • Highly Agile cow
  • Ability to pull a plow with a height of 5 feet.

Home Tract :

  • Andhra Pradesh

Type :

  • Dual, Draught region

Colour :

  • White, Males dark grey markings on head, neck & hump.

Special Blacks :

  • Muzzle, eye, hooves, fetlock, hind quarters, tip of tail, anal region, tip of ear & tip of testes

Key insight :

  • Tough, natural tolerance to tropical heat and disease resistance power
  • Most powerful bulls

Punganur

Home Tract :

  • Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh

Type :

  • Draught (highly drought resistant)

Colour :

  • White, Light grey.

Height & weight :

  • 70 to 90 cm (115 to 200 kg)

Food intake :

  • 5Kg per day

Milk :

  • High Fat content (8% against 3 to 3.5%)

Key insight :

  • One of the smallest cow in the world
  • verge of extinction

Home Tract :

  • Bargur forest hills of Erode dist. of Tamil Nadu and parts of western ghats in Karnataka and Kerala

  • Brown and white Patches.

Key insight :

  • best known for their endurance, speed and gallopping ability.
  • Speed of working is very high

Kangeyam

Home Tract :

  • Erode, Dindigul & Coimbatore districts of Tamilnadu

Type :

  • Draught, Medium size

Colour :

  • Grey & White
  • Dark colour in hump, fore & hind

Key insight :

  • Kangeyam bulls are commonly used in the traditional spectacle of Jallikattu

  • Small type, Draught area breed

Colour :

  • Light red, black, fawn & white

  • average 2 feet 10 inch

Key insight :

  • In 2000 listed on the FAO's World Watch List of Domestic Animal Diversity in Critical-Maintained Breeds List

Kankrej

Home Tract :

  • Kutch of Gujarat, parts of Rajastan & Mohenjo-daro in Sindh

Type :

  • Heavy breed. One of the oldest breeds of India

Colour :

  • Grey or Steel black. Males - hind & fore quarters, Hump is black

Key insight :

  • Very powerful bull
  • Bull seal from Harappa civilization

Deoni

Home tract :

  • Bidar, Gulbarga of Karnataka, Latur, Osmanabad, Parbhani, Nanded, and Bidar of Maharashtra

Skin :

  • Black, white, and gray

Type :

  • Medium sized animal , Dual
  • Distinctive hump on its back and lyre-shaped horns.

Key insight :

  • It is also known as “Dongarpati” or “Dangari” or “Deccani” or “Surti”.
  • Very intelligent cow
  • Recognized for dual-purpose utility, it excels in both milk production and draught work, making it a valuable asset for farmers.
  • With a robust build and adaptable nature, the Deoni is well-suited to various environmental conditions.

Gir

Home Tract :

  • Gir forest of Gujarat

Type :

  • Milk breed
  • Known for its tolerance to stress condition

Colour :

  • Red, speckled red

Key insight :

  • High milk yield (~10-15 Litre/day)
  • Very hard-working bull
  • Non Residential Indian (NRI)
  • Traces of gold found in urine

Red Sindhi

Home Tract :

  • Sindh province of Pakistan

Type :

  • Milk breed
  • Known for its tolerance to stress condition

Colour :

  • Red, deep reddish brown to a yellowish red

Key insight :

  • The Red Sindhi breed has a very high genetic potential for milk production (~12-15 Litres/day)

Sahiwal

Home Tract :

  • Sahiwal district of Pakistan, Punjab

Type :

  • Milk breed

Colour :

  • Usually reddish
  • Brown with white spots is also seen

Key insight :

  • High Milk yielding breed ( ~15-20 Litre/day)
  • Non Residential Indian (NRI)

Amrit Mahal

Home tract :

  • Native of Karnataka region & known for endurance and speed.

Skin :

  • Grey ,white to almost black

Type :

  • Dark shades on neck, shoulder, hump and hindquarters, white/grey markings on the face

Key Insights :

  • In ancient times, used elephants for transportation during wartime.
  • Capable of covering a distance of around 100 miles in two days.
